However, the sound is definitel different... it doesn't have the same bass thump (or weight!) The super distortion was a little thinner sounding. The JB is a bit more open on the top. I agree with all you said, but I'd like to point out that Dave Mustaine uses a JB in the bridge of his guitars, so if that's a sound you're interested in, it can certainly be used for thrash metal. But I like them because of the dynamics and response I get with my mahogany guitars and tube amps in particular. I think you may like the Duncan Custom at 14K it's plenty overwound yet doesn't have the midspike the JB does and the ceramic magnet gives it clarity compared to the JB. See if you can find one locally. It's the kind of pickup I could play all day without any effects into a pushed amp. Both are high output, but the DD's ceramic magnet gives it a little unnatural edge, which is nice for metal occasionally, but not necessary.
